PHENOMENA
The only way for plants to survive in desert is to absorb the morning dew. The dew appears because of the big temperature difference between day and night. Cactus is one of the plants families which can establish in such hardcore conditions. It is defined by several interesting phenomena. One of them is based on the function to collect water from the air, or rather morning dew. This phenomenon is based on three features of the cactus plant which are being explored in the project:
- V-groove is protecting the water which is flowing to the roots, from wind and sun.
- twisting direction depending on the earths hemisphere (Earths turning direction)
- thorns length. The bigger the temperature difference between night and day is, the bigger the thorns are growing. The growth is influenced by the cactus desire to collect as much water as possible.
RESEARCH
Dew point is the difference between surface temperature and air temperature. It is formed when water is starting to condense (it is highly dependant on the humidity factor). Factors which are influencing air temperature in an urban environment:
- cars, people, buildings, factories - are heating the air up to 50 m above ground
- every 1km above ground, the temperature is falling down 6°C
After comparing the conditions in Berlin and in Dubai, the results turned out to be, as expected, very different (rotation according to hemisphere, max possible height of dew condensation, etc.).
PROJECT STATEMENT
The site is in Dubai. The climate is very dry and prices for water are high. The task is to make a facade which will collect morning dew in order to feed the building with water. The problem is that the water obtained in such a way, is gray water, so it is suited only for watering gardens and toilet usage. Because the main function is hotel, the facade should absorb 43% of the water the building needs. This means a total of 16,425, 000 L/year.
RESULT
The hotel is 225 m high (because in Dubai the maximum height at which water can condense is 225 m) with a double façade system and can hold up to 1,350 visitors :
- the first layer is glass and concrete
- the second layer is a network of perforated pipes. In the pipes there is a nano-sponge material which is absorbing and creating a water flow. All the facade is divided in units 3,3m x 4,5m (which are the hotel rooms) and each unit has a different length of pipes in order to increase the facade area and therefore to absorb the demanded water level.
The facade depends on the height at which the unit is located, sun and time. Overflow of water is going to the next unit and so on. Gardens are appearing in units with big overflow. Climber plants are growing from the unit and creating a shadowing curtain for the façade, therefore aiding in keeping it cool. Because of the shadow and lower temperature, more water is condensing and again the overflow of water appears. This units becoming water reservoirs and are cooling down the facade again. A continuous cycle is created.
Result of the calculations:
- 1.992 people in the hotel, 99.632 L/day, 36.365.886 L/year including rain water
- with a 50% efficiency: 1.350 people, 49.816 L/day, 18.182.940 L/year
- extra 4.816 L/day, 1.757.840 L/year
